PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico, October 9, 2009 – The
women’s Mexican teams that participated in the
III NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit tournament
being held in Puerto Vallarta had a first run of
positive results, leading 3 of the 4 competing
teams into the quarterfinals taking place on
Saturday starting at 9:00AM. In the men’s
category, the Mexican selection did not have the
opportunity to advance.
In the women’s category, during a match at the
main court at the stadium in the Unidad Agustin
Flores Contreras Sports Complex, team Mexico 3,
made up of Rosario Reyes and Xitlali Herrera,
defeated Guatemalans Maria Orellana and Anna
Ramirez after two set sets with a partial score
of 21-15 on both occasions.
On the second round, team Mexico 3 overtook the
Costa Rican duo made up of Mariana Elena Alfaro
and Irene Fonseca, with a double score of 13-21.
The duo integrated by Diana Estrada and Martha
Revueltas (team Mexico 2) defeated Canada’s
Jamie Border and Elizabeth Maloney in their
first bout in three sets (21-14, 15-21, and
15-21). In the next round, they also imposed
themselves over the United States team made up
of Kristen Batt and Megan Wallin with partial
scores of 12-21 and 13-21.
The third Mexican duo to qualify and thus stay
in the event was the one made up by Beijing 2008
Olympians, Mayra Garcia and Bibiana Candelas,
who in their first encounter defeated Puerto
Rico’s Yarleen Santiago and Darian Acevedo in
three sets with partial scores of 21-12, 13-25,
and 15-16.
Cuba was the fourth team to qualify in the
women’s category after winning over El
Salvador’s Yvonne Soler and Laura Molina with a
score of 21-11 and 21-13.
In the men’s category, the teams qualifying for
the quarterfinals were Puerto Rico, Canada 1,
Cuba and the United States.
Puerto Rico’s Orlando Irizarry and Roberto
Rodriguez left behind the team from Nicaragua
made up of Winston Calderon and Danny Lopez with
partial scores of 21-12 and 21-18.
Canada’s Josh Binstock and Matt Zbysewski
defeated Mexico’s Salvador Frias and Tomas
Hernandez in two sets both with a score of 21-0
and also, Canada’s Raymond Sewell and Martin
Reader defeated team Mexico 1 (Aldo Miramontes
and Juan Virgen) in three sets of 21-13, 13-20,
and 5-15.
Cuba’s Yoendry Kindelan and Yunieski Ramirez
overtook Mexico’s Ulises and Lombardo Ontiveros
in three sets with partial scores of 24-26,
21-18, and 15-10.
Finally, the United States earned their pass to
the quarterfinals after Seth Burnham and Marcin
Jagoda defeated Guatemala’s Jorge Bolaños and
Erick Garrido.
